Rhonda Sekhmet Ra (pronounced Ron-duh Seck-met Rah) is a revolutionary poet and spoken word artist born and raised in Wilmington, NC. Her poetry is primarily focused on revealing truths about racism & oppression while empowering people of African descent through her powerful and soulful poetry. Rhonda has been writing poetry consistently since her childhood and has been performing spoken word for almost ten years. Throughout her time as a spoken word artist, Rhonda has been invited to share spoken word at over a hundred venues across the east coast including in South Carolina, Florida, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey and various cities in North Carolina (her home state). She has performed at community events, schools, churches, ceremonies, theatres as well as for a number of organizations and businesses.

Rhonda started her spoken word career in Miami, FL where she started performing spoken word in 2014 after a shift in racial consciousness. She was quickly made a house poet at the “Speak Miami” venue and she went on to give her first featured performance in 2015 at an artistic space called “Artistic Vibes.” In 2017, Rhonda created her first poetry chapbook entitled “The Awakening” printed by a local black owned printing company.  In 2020, Rhonda started a monthly poetry writing workshop entitled “Let Your Soul Write” which she has been facilitating for almost four years.  Through this workshop, Rhonda uses her background in social work and psychology as well as her deep understanding of poetry to provide a safe space for individuals to express themselves freely while processing their emotions and thoughts in a creative way. In 2023, she released her first spoken word album “The Awakening” after being awarded the Artist Support Grant from the NC Arts Council. In 2024, Rhonda released a collection of poems entitled “The Awakening Anthology” which was self published and originally printed by a historical black owned printing & publishing company (Black Classic Press). As a poet and spoken word artist, Rhonda uses her art to free the mind, body and soul of people of African descent. Her goal is to use the art of poetry as a tool for change and she aims to follow the legacy of the revolutionary Black Spoken Word Artists that came before her.
